Spiti Valley is one of those places that changes you. Nestled at 12,500 ft in the Indian Himalayas, this cold desert mountain valley is raw, remote, and utterly breathtaking.

Why Visit Spiti Valley?

Spiti is for the traveller who wants more than just a pretty destination — it's for those who want to feel something. The silence here is deafening. The skies are impossibly clear. And the people are among the warmest you'll ever encounter.

Best Time to Visit

June to October is the prime time, with July-August being the peak season. The Manali-Spiti route via Rohtang and Kunzum passes opens only from June to early October. The Shimla-Spiti route via Kinnaur remains open almost year-round.

Winter (November-March) is magical for the adventurous — frozen rivers, snow-covered monasteries — but most guesthouses close and the region becomes extremely isolated.

How to Reach Spiti

From Manali: The adventurous route via Rohtang Pass and Kunzum La (3,978m). Journey takes 8-10 hours. Open June to October only.

From Shimla: The longer but more comfortable route via Kinnaur Valley on NH-5. Takes 12-14 hours but is open year-round.

Where to Stay

Kaza is the main hub with multiple guesthouses and homestays. For an authentic experience, stay in local homestays in villages like Langza, Komic, or Kibber. Prices range from ₹500 to ₹2,500 per night.

Top Sights

  • **Key Monastery** – The largest monastery in Spiti at 13,668 ft
  • **Chandratal Lake** – The crescent-shaped Moon Lake at 14,100 ft
  • **Kibber Village** – One of the highest motorable villages in the world
  • **Langza** – Buddha statue overlooking the valley, known for marine fossils
  • **Dhankar Monastery** – Perched dramatically on a cliff edge

Budget

Expect to spend ₹2,000-4,000 per day including accommodation, food, and local transport. Organised group trips from Delhi typically cost ₹12,000-18,000 for 8-9 days all-inclusive.

Important Tips

  1. Carry sufficient cash — the only ATM is in Kaza and often runs out
  2. There's very limited mobile connectivity (BSNL works partially)
  3. Altitude sickness can affect anyone — acclimatise properly
  4. Respect local Buddhist culture — dress modestly at monasteries
  5. Carry warm clothes even in summer — nights drop to near-freezing
