If you've been wanting to do your first snow trek but didn't know where to start, Kedarkantha is your answer. Located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary of Uttarakhand, this moderate-level trek summits at 12,500 ft and offers some of the most spectacular Himalayan views you'll ever see.

Best Time to Do Kedarkantha

December to April is the ideal window, with January-February offering the best snow conditions. December offers fresh snowfall and fewer crowds.

Training Before the Trek

You don't need to be an athlete, but 3-4 weeks of preparation helps:

  • Daily 3-4 km walks or jogs
  • Stair climbing (aim for 10 floors daily)
  • Basic stretching and yoga for flexibility

What to Pack

Clothing:

  • Heavy down jacket (mandatory)
  • Thermal innerwear (2 sets)
  • Fleece mid-layer
  • Waterproof outer shell
  • Woollen balaclava, gloves, and thick socks

Footwear:

  • Waterproof trekking shoes with ankle support (most important!)

Other essentials:

  • Trekking pole (knees will thank you)
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ (snow reflects UV rays intensely)
  • Personal medications
  • Energy bars and dry fruits

Route Overview

Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri (base camp, 6,400 ft)

Day 2: Sankri to Juda Ka Talab (9,100 ft) — 4 km trek

Day 3: Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp (11,250 ft) — 4 km

Day 4: Summit Day! Base Camp to Kedarkantha Peak (12,500 ft) and descend to Hargaon Camp

Day 5: Hargaon to Sankri, then drive to Dehradun

The Summit Experience

You'll start the summit push at 4 AM with headlamps. As you gain altitude through deep snow, the sky slowly brightens. Reaching the summit at sunrise with 360° views of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak is a moment you'll never forget.
