10 Things Nobody Tells You About Backpacking Meghalaya

I visited Meghalaya expecting waterfalls and root bridges. I got that, plus a whole lot of surprises. Here's my honest, unfiltered guide to things nobody tells you before your first Meghalaya trip.

1. The Root Bridge Trek is Harder Than You Think

Everyone posts the beautiful photos but nobody mentions the 3,500 steps DOWN to reach the double decker root bridge — and then 3,500 steps back UP. It took us 5 hours round trip. Your knees will hate you. Bring trekking poles.

2. It Rains. A Lot.

Cherrapunji holds the record for the world's highest annual rainfall. Even in the dry season, surprise showers happen. Pack a quality rain jacket and waterproof cover for your bag — not optional.

3. Dawki is Jaw-Dropping But Crowded

The crystal-clear river photos are real. But on weekends, there can be 50+ boats on the river. Go early morning on weekdays for the serene experience you see in photos.

4. Mawlynnong Really Is That Clean

Asia's cleanest village lives up to its reputation. Bamboo dustbins everywhere, zero litter, community-maintained cleanliness. It's inspiring, not just a tourist gimmick.

5. The Food Will Surprise You

Jadoh (pork with red rice), Dohneiiong (pork with black sesame), Nakham Bitchi — Khasi cuisine is underrated and delicious. Skip the tourist restaurants and eat where locals eat.

6. Mobile Internet is Patchy

Outside Shillong, mobile data becomes unreliable. Download offline maps and information before you head to Cherrapunji or Dawki. BSNL tends to work better in remote areas.

7. Shillong Has Great Live Music

The 'Rock Capital of India' title is earned — live music venues like Café Shillong and Dylan's Café host nightly performances. Don't skip a Shillong evening.

8. Homestays Beat Hotels

The best accommodation experiences are homestays with local Khasi families. You get authentic food, local stories, and genuine warmth that no hotel can replicate. Usually cheaper too (₹600-1200 per night).

9. Start Early Every Day

Traffic in Shillong is brutal. Most attractions have limited hours. The root bridge gets crowded after 10 AM. An early start makes the entire experience better.

10. One Week is the Minimum

Shillong (2 days) + Cherrapunji + Root Bridge (2 days) + Mawlynnong + Dawki (1-2 days) = minimum 5-6 days. Add Kaziranga or Balpakram for a fuller Northeast experience.
